What is the Celebrate Youth Assistance
Program ?
The Celebrate Youth Assistance Program is a non-profit
organization formed five years ago in memory of Kevin Drake, a 25-year
old Hendersonville native and East Henderson High School graduate and
athlete who dedicated his short life to helping children. Before
his death from cancer, Kevin worked with autistic and other children in
need of adult assistance. Kevin saw potential in others and
opportunities where most did not. In honor of Kevin, his parents
Chris and Shirley Drake, and Phil Childs, Kevin's friend and then
manager at Kelsey's restaurant, created an assistance fund for local
children in need. To date the foundation has helped needy children
receive imperative medical care, college scholarships, and otherwise
unaffordable tutoring.
What does Celebrate Youth Do ?
Over the past five years others have joined Celebrate Youth's efforts,
including the Hendersonville Elk's Lodge members and family and friends of
Kevin. Each year the number of young people helped grows. A 100%
volunteer program, all funds raised for Celebrate Youth go directly to assisting
local youths achieve their otherwise unaffordable dreams. Fund recipients
are nominated by guidance counselors, clergy, and other community
members/organizations. Designed to reach youths that other financial programs
may not help, Celebrate Youth looks for deserving young people who may not be
able to reach full potential because of illness, tragedy, or other hardship.
